Trash Costs Us All Cash - But Landfill Compaction Helps Reduce the Volume of Landfills

In this article the author explains how leaving litter degrades not only the environment, but also those that do the littering.

Landfill compaction equipment is part of the answer, so that when the rubbish gets to the landfill it is efficiently crushed under the specially designed compactor wheels, and increases the density of the waste in the landfill. In this way landfill compactorsdo a great deall to keep our world tidy, but few realise this or give their operators a second thought. Read the article, which we have copied below and we hope you will then understand this bettter:

Garbage is big business. In fact, the money spent
on "picking up" garbage left behind in public places
such as parks, beaches, and forest land would pay
for highway repairs, and benefit schools all over the
country. America the Beautiful is fast becoming one
of unprecedented garbage problems. Trash from
car windows, in recreational places with garbage cans,
but somehow the trash misses and lands anywhere but
in the facilities provided, is still paid for with tax dollars.

>
>

Personal integrity is judged by more than the person
themselves. It is also in the immediate surroundings of
that individual. If you live with trash strewn all over your
living area, then well, basically you need to clean up
more than your back yard. Self-esteem reaches beyond
who we are to our priorities. Something as simple as
tossing that Mickey D's wrapper and cup right out the
window displays a disregard for the highway used by
millions of others, but also for the workers who have to
clean it up. Their energy and pay check could be used
in other vital areas to benefit mankind in ways that picking
up after you just doesn't "cut" it.

Forest lands are modern day garbage dumps. During the
summer months, the scars on the land are not quite as
visible, but come winter with the leaves down and trees
bare, the degradation of humanity is glaring. Abandoned
cars, kitchen appliances, and yes, even baby diapers that
just aren't "biodegrading" fast enough are not views that
are displayed on travel brochures. Known as a
"throw away society", America was also known as America
the Beautiful. Scenic places and tranquil lakes are now
plastic bag and water and pop bottle havens. Clean-up
is more than a volunteer and community activitiy, it is
expensive and time-consuming. Tax dollars are used
and those who care enough to use trash barrels and con-
tainers still pay just as much from their pay checks as those
who toss and abuse and just don't care.

If the environment doesn't tear at your heart, then maybe
your wallet will. Small steps such as garbage disposal could
mean the difference between more community activities and
better education, but it's your choice. The next time you
roll down that window and toss, look in the back seat where
your child is. Their future costs money and would you rather
pay the salary to someone to clean up your disrespect or
see that your child gets the best in a school or sport activity?
It's your call - but the heap is getting bigger.

Why Use Biodegradable Trash Bags?

In this article you will find a description of Biodegradable trash bags, their chractertics and advantages. We hope you find this to be an intersresting article to help you choose the type of rubbish storage you will use. Please click the link at the bottom of the articles for more information:

Biodegradable trash bags are a good way to do your part to keep massive amounts of garbage out of our landfills. The fact of the matter is that we all throw things out, and when you add up the amount of garbage per person, it adds up to a huge pile of garbage. Our landfills are filling up faster than we can find space to throw out our garbage, so it is important to help out by (a) throwing less out and (b) using bags that break down in our landfills.

>
>

Not many people are using biodegradable trash bags. Most are not even aware of their existence and this is because they are fairly new on the market. Once you are aware of their existence, though, there is no good reason not to use them. They are no more expensive than regular garbage bags and they break down in the landfill at a much faster rate than regular garbage bags.

There are three main types of biodegradable bags available:

1. Oxo - meaning the plastic will break down when exposed to oxygen;
2. Bio - meaning the plastic breaks down into CO2 and water when it is exposed to UV light, moisture, heat and microorganisms;
3. Degradable - means it can be broken down

The process behind the biodegradation is two fold. First the plastic is oxidized, then micro organisms consume the plastic leaving behind "refuse" which is a reusable biomass which is both environmentally friendly and does not contain harmful toxins. All products that biodegrade find their way into our waterways and our earth, so we need to take care with what we dispose of and how we dispose of it.

No one is certain how long it takes for a regular trash bag to break down, but estimates are over 1,000 years! We haven't been using them long enough to know for sure. We certainly do not want to leave a legacy of massive piles of plastic bags behind for future generations, so it is good to think now of that possibility.

This is why using biodegradable trash bags is not only sensible but prudent. If you cannot locate these types of bags in your local supermarket, the next best choice is to order them from an online store. They are no more expensive than regular plastic bags and you can be certain that you are doing your part to be green whenever you throw away trash.

Home Trash in London Ontario Goes to the W12A Landfill

When residents of an area do renovation, new construction, and spring cleaning they add many loads of garbage to the regular household trash. Cities of any size at all have historically developed methods of hauling away the regular stream of junk and disposing of it in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. Garbage used to be burned or thrown in the rivers which proved to be the major cause of local pollution of the air and water. This is the story of the W12A landfill that is the destination for trucks performing St. Thomas, Kitchener, Waterloo, Stratford, Cambridge, and London Ontario trash removal to compact the non-recyclable garbage and compress it into a landfill site.

Cities like London Ontario must do their trash removal and disposal in such a way as to conform to guidelines set out in the Environmental Assessment Act, Environmental Protection Act, and the Ontario Water Resources Act. The W12A landfill was opened in 1977 and is still evolving in order to handle three to four million more tons of residential and business rubbish in addition to the six million tons already deposited. The site covers 147 hectares, with 107 hectares being used to accommodate the quarter of a million annual tons of city waste from the 100 waste removal trucks that make their rounds collecting everything the city can throw at them.

Science has helped in the management of all this waste; older people will remember a time when the small rivers where dad used to fish as a child had been turned into lifeless toxic streams of undrinkable water caused by both direct dumping and leaching through the soil. Leachate collection piping and storm water management ponds are now used to prevent further environmental damage. The same approach has been taken to cause less damage to the air; decomposing garbage creates methane, a flammable gas which is 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as an agent of global warming, so the methane is burned in a large flare to get rid of the foul smell and to turn the methane into a less damaging carbon dioxide form.

The Blue Box Program of 1990 began to impress upon householders the need for separating and recycling trash. Can, plastic bottles, cardboard, paper, and packaging materials can go out in the Blue Box. Large appliances and other recyclables shouldn't take up valuable space in a landfill so they are picked up by either city trucks or private junk removal services. If a homeowner starts to plan major home improvements that require trashing materials like tiling, wood, scrap metal, bricks, flooring, shingles, and other substances ripped out from the house, a private company would provide dumpster rental and pick up to get the trash to the right destination.

When you see pictures of landfill sites, you may notice that they sit high up on a man-made plateau; this helps to trap the sound from the heavy machinery used to compact and move the garbage around, since earth transmits sound waves less efficiently than through the air. The landfills are also ringed with litter fences to keep bits of trash from blowing into inhabited areas. You may find grass-covered berms along the perimeter to improve the look of the landfill. Soil is spread over the layers of garbage to reduce the smells.

Various depots have been set up to drop off selected types of trash. By recycling old tires, glass, cans, and other categorized materials, the population of London Ontario has reduced their total annual garbage from 420 kilograms in 1987 to 247 kilograms in 2007. With further advances in garbage management, there may be a day when pollution is only a distasteful memory of the past.

SEO consultant Pat Boardman writes this in respect to the junk removal company JUNKchasers who provide waste removal services for residences and businesses in the area around London Ontario including Kitchener, Waterloo, Stratford, Cambridge, St. Thomas, Brantford, and Woodstock Ontario.

Talking Trash - The History and Future of The Stuff We Don't Want

Since people arrived on the Earth, we have had to find a way to dispose of unwanted materials. Garbage has been here since the beginning of time and it will be here in the end of time. Effective waste containment began with a lesson learned the hard way and continues to evolve today with the increase in recycling efforts.

>
>

For the first 1300 years or so, waste management was pretty simple. Like a child told to clean his room, whatever our forefathers couldn't burn they hid by either burying it or throwing in the sea. Apparently, they also just threw it on the ground...wherever.

Fast forward many mounds of waste later to 1350 and the "black plague." After 25 million people from all over Europe fell victim to this deadly disease in just five years, scholars figured out that widespread unsanitary waste conditions were a contributing factor. Thus, the trash can and the garbage man came into being.

In modern day society, a good waste container is something no one can live without. The goal of any trash can is to effectively control contamination and foul odor. Over the years, a wide variety garbage bins and trash containers have developed with each type perfectly suited for its specific purpose. You may be familiar with covered and uncovered garbage containers and the step-on and foot opening waste cans which have facilitated disposing of refuse in a hygienic and touch free manner. This innovation has been especially important for the medical community in controlling the spread of germs.

With thousands of models from kitchen trash bins for residential use and large heavy-duty outdoor trash receptacles for commercial use, finding a waste container to meet your needs has never been easier. From wood to stainless steel containers and from plastic to fire-retardant fiber glass waste receptacles, this king of cleaning products offers something for everyone. Special features found on some of these janitorial products include easy-lift; rust and rodent resistance; rolling ability; Slim Jim design for tight spaces; ability to withstand extreme weather; easy-to-clean; impact and crack resistant design; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance; quiet, slow-close lids and more. In addition to complimentary products like liners and trash bags, there is also a variety of accessories for trash cans like wheeled dolly attachments for added mobility.

Most recently, the increase in recycling has given birth to a wide variety of recycling containers. There are also combination recycling stations that have separate sections for plastic, paper and regular trash. Some lids have cut our shapes so only the designated material, like a water bottle can be inserted. This prevents cross-contamination with food and other waste.

Between government recycling mandates and increased awareness of the environmental benefit and cost savings of recycling, perhaps one day all trash cans will be integrated recycling centers. The less landfill waste we generate the higher probability we can keep that pesky Black Plaque where it belongs - in the past.

Where Does All Your Trash Go?

On average, Americans produce about 1,600 pounds (726 kg) of garbage per person per year. To cut down all that trash, make sure that you are following the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle.

What happens to the waste that garbage trucks collect? In the United States, most trash is taken to landfills. Other trash is transported to incinerators, where it is burned for energy.

LANDFILLS are sites that are carefully designed to prevent dangerous waste from escaping into the soil and getting into groundwater. A thick layer of clay or plastic separates the garbage from the ground, and every day workers add a layer of soil to cover the trash on top. Liquid waste, called leachate, is pumped to the surface, where it is treated and made safe.

Sadly, landfills are expensive and can be bad for the environment. Materials deposited in landfills often do not decompose quickly, and the waste releases harmful methane gas into the environment as it breaks down. Fact: Some landfills collect the methane gas produced from their trash, treat it and then sell it as fuel.

>
>
burn garbage to create energy. The trash is put into the plants' incinerators, where it burns down to about 10% of its original volume. The energy created by this process heats water, which is turned into steam, which generates electricity. Because burning waste results in harmful CO2 gases, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that waste-to-energy plants comply with certain rules abut capturing those emissions.

What Does Biodegradable Really Mean?

A biodegradable product has the ability to break down (decompose) safely, quickly and naturally. Many biodegradable products that are sent to landfills, however, do not decompose quickly, because there's too much trash there and not enough air.

Some of the least biodegradable products include: disposable diapers, aluminum cans (You can recycle these.), tin cans, plastic bags, film canisters, glass bottles (\You can recycle these too!) and styrofoam cups.

Tips to Reduce Trash

- Try not to buy more than you need.
- Avoid products with a lot of packaging.
- Try to fix broken items rather than immediately replacing them.
- Donate your old toys, clothes and furnitures to charity or community organizations.

A Waste-Wise City

Hamburg, Germany, provides a good example of what a city can do to decrease waste. The city has invested money in incinerators that have special filters to prevent harmful gases from escaping. The energy generated by the burning of trash is used to heat nearby homes. Ten years ago, Hamburg produced 1.6 million tons of waste and recycled less than 3% of it. Today, the city generates only 1.4 million tons and recycles nearly 60% of its waste.

The Evolution of Trash Services

Trash service has always been a need, but it can came a long way since those early times when trash was just dumped wherever. We have found many ways to make trash removal healthier and better for the environment. There have been great strides in trash service that have brought to our civilized and well managed methods that we have today.

>
>

In the Beginning

There has always been trash of some kind. Though it is not documented, the early civilizations probably just dropped trash anywhere. Of course, their trash would have been biodegradable and probably just broke down and was absorbed back into the earth. It was nothing like the many man-made products we throw away today.

In Greece, in 500 B.C. there was a municipal dump where everyone would dump their trash. The Mayans also had a trash dump. In early Europe, people would simply dump trash in the gutters. Some people would burn their trash as a heat source or go through the trash of wealthy neighbors for food scraps or other items that they would reuse.

The Next Step Up

It was in the 1800s when the first actual trash service began. Horse drawn carts were used to help carry away the trash that was shoveled off the streets.

In the 1900s some small towns developed places where pigs were housed and fed the trash collected from the town. These were called piggeries. Piggeries functioned well and many places still had one as late as the 1960s. However, in the 1950s many pigs in the piggeries got sick and laws were passed that all garbage must be cooked before being fed to the pigs.

Also during the 1900s, larger cities had dumps. Most trash was brought to the dump by each individual, but some areas had collection which was done by a horse drawn cart. The trash in the dumps was usually burnt.

More Modern Times

As cities became more industrialized, there became a need to keep the streets and the water sources clean. Vehicles were built to collect trash. The first trucks were just open and trash often spilled out of them. Later on vehicles with compactors came along to make the trash service collection more sanitary.

Today there is municipal garbage collection which collects your trash right at your curbside. In some places you may use a dumpster where you put your trash into a large bin and a truck comes and collects it. Trash dumps are sanitary and many different policies help to ensure that trash is kept separate from ground water and other water sources, in addition, to being kept away from the population and posing a health threat.

In addition, recycling centers also help with trash service. Most cities offer a recycling service where you can set out your recyclables and have them picked up just like your trash.

The strict laws and standards, today, have ensuring that trash service operates like a very well oiled machine. You will not find trash being dumped in the streets and raging illnesses attributed to unsanitary trash disposal. Trash service has came a long way from the beginning.

Get Rid of Your Trash Can Smell Before it Gets Rid of You!

One of the worst smells to bear is the lingering 'aroma' of the trash in the can. And we all know how difficult it is to get rid of that smell once it settles in the interior plastic of your garbage can. Whether you have a trash can, a garbage can, a garbage disposal, it doesn't matter: it stinks after the trash has been disposed of.

>
>

It is not easy to get rid of that heavy sweetish sometimes sickening smell of the disposed garbage, particularly from tight areas that do not get enough fresh air. Also the problem with trash is that it consists of many things, which means that it's quite difficult for air fresheners to be effective in eliminating a particular odor. However all is not lost: you can effectively and efficiently remove the odor of trash from your kitchen or any other place in your home where you previously had the garbage removed. And best of all, you have most of the tools right in your home. With the tips below you will be able to get rid of the trash can smell in no time:

Clean up your trash can right after removing the garbage from it. Put warm water in the can with a few squirts of bleach and while you have plastic gloves on, use a kitchen sponge to wash out the container immediately after having taken down the trash. Use charcoal - Charcoal is a product that is integrated in most smell removing commercial products as it is an effective smell absorbent. Simply place a piece of charcoal inside the smelly bin and leave it for a few days (of course do not forget to wash out the bin first as per the first tip). Use baking soda - Baking soda in the kitchen is like aspirin for medicine: a cure-all kind of item. Baking soda is a great absorbent, just like charcoal. Put a full spoon (or two) of baking soda in the can and leave the lid open. Leave it for a few days after which remove it and put a new spoon of soda in it. Keep repeating the process until all traces of the smell are gone from your trashcan. Use ground coffee - Put some ground coffee at the bottom of your trash can in a small container and leave it there for a few days. This time close the lid. Coffee will not eliminate the heavy odor forever, however it will mask it and leave instead the smell of coffee until you are ready to deal with the recurring smell more effectively. Use some orange peels - Another tip for masking the garbage smell is using orange peels. Leave them for a few days in the can with the lid closed and remove once the smell is replaced with that of the orange.

Depending on how heavy the lingering smell is, you might need one or more of the above tips to get rid of the trash can odor. But no matter what you do, you should always wash out the bin after taking out the trash. This is the safest ways to have your garbage can not only smelling nice but also free of bacteria that is left behind from the eliminated gunk.

One of the best types of trash cans that has practically no odor once the garbage has been taken out is the touchless trash can. For more information on why a stainless steel trash can is the best for your kitchen and what are its benefits, visit my site at http://www.stainlesssteeltrashcan.org/

Beijing and the Trash Catastrophe That Won't Go Away

Beijing is a major city like no other; it's population puts it in the top 10-12 in the world. With its huge and massive growth it is having growing pains, one of which is the abundance of trash and garbage that it produces daily. The landfills cannot keep up and are being overrun and we are not talking about one or two, we are talking about 12 giant dumps. Beijing's municipal commission has issued a "garbage crisis" alert.

>
>

They are trying to burn some of the trash and bury the rest, unfortunately, these landfills lack all they need to be safe for the future, underground water, and they aren't big enough and at least 10-more will be needed within the next decade, but there is no more room, so garbage will have to be taken far away. Most of the landfills are already beyond capacity and the city has been growing 10% per year and appears that this will continue.

There are many new rules and regulation for trash, but it's not enough. Some feel the answer is more substantial use of recycling, but they indicate they are doing a good bit of that already, mostly because they need to the materials. Further, some Think Tanks say they need to convert the trash to energy, but even if they do this, these facilities would not be built fast enough to solve the current problem. They have stopped plastic bags at stores and done many other things as well, it's not enough. There is just too much refuse and not enough solutions to fix the problem.

Prices of Outdoor Trash Cans

An outdoor trash can is the place where you store all the garbage of your house so the garbage collector can pick it up in the morning. These trash cans are larger in size compared to the traditional garbage bins and come in many different colors and styles. You can either go for the can made of stainless steel or plastic. You can either opt for a simple trash can or the more fancy one. These outdoor cans are ideal to be placed in a backyard during family outings or barbeques to avoid your backyard being littered with garbage.

>
>

The price of trash cans may vary depending on the size and type you choose. A basic trash can will cost you under $10. Trash cans that come with lids cost a little more and may cost you somewhere in the range of $10 to $50. Some trash cans come with side handles which makes it easy to pick them up. These can be purchased for around $30. For those of you who want to purchase a trash can that is not only functional but is also appealing to the eyes, it may cost you as high as $150.

While the price of the trash can is important, it shouldn't be your only criterion of selection. There are a number of other things that need to be considered when looking to buy a trash can. Firstly, you should consider how big you want your trash can to be. This will depend on how regularly garbage is collected in your area. Generally, the less regularly the garbage collector comes, the bigger the trash can you will need. The second consideration is the ease of movement. In general, trash cans with built-in wheels are more suitable for outdoor use. Not only are they easier to move around but the wheels also help to protect the base of the can.

If you are looking to buy an outdoor trash can, you should start searching for it on the internet. You can read customer reviews and compare the prices of different trash cans available on the market. This will ensure that you buy the right trash can at the right price without having to pay a single extra penny. If you don't like shopping online, you can visit your local retailer to get the trash can that suits your needs.

Trash Compactor Bags Are Fabulously Rugged and Hard to Live Without

An apparatus that is utilized for constricting trash or garbage is called a waste compactor. When the motor in the press is switched on it squeezes the waste in the compactor. The garbage amount is reduced to fraction it was before the bags used are specialized for use solely in trash compactors. Using them in together, most of the trash taken to landfills could be reused. By make different kind of garbage compactor bags, the people are getting aware of sanitation and as a result the living standards increase for domestic people.

>
>

Using them for recyclable wastes is earth friendly, as more the recyclable items are reused in their compressed form, the fewer amounts of plastic bags are used. Generally, a trash compactor will make six compacted bags to a bag of 20 pounds. Normally, the more time it takes for the trash to fill, the better off you are. The customers did not use different categories of dustbin to make separation and some of the areas will use tractor compactor for garbage so that it will complete the capacity slowly

The utmost amount of recyclable refuse in a garbage compactor bag is dependent upon the force of the compactor. A waste compactor crushes the waste by means of a compactor plate that squeezes out air and space between and within objects. The utmost amount of force is 3500 pounds, which is used by the largest farms.

While Trash Compactor Bags are available from several sources, the manufacturer of the device should also sell them. You may, however, be assured that your compactor will perform ideally, if you purchase waste compactor bags, that are recommended by the manufacturer of your unit. You can also choose the brand that will form a part of the home decor. Most of the bags can be integrated into cabinet trash compactors. Normally, plastic or paper is the material used in this type of bag. They are also available in different sizes and quantities, 15 inch, 18 inch and packs, 55 per pack, 200 per pack etc

A normal trash bag is softer then the trash compactor bag because the trash compactor bag is very heavy than normal garbage bag. If you put glass in your garbage compactor, it will more than likely damage the bag, so it is not a good idea. As the trash compressor bags are not emptied as often, it is often suggested not to put food items into compactors also. Deodorizers are an option in some trash compressor bags. Durability varies up to 19 months also, 1 bag per week usage the pack lasts up to three years depending on number of bags in the pack.

Deodorized trash compressor bags are also available The SLIP-N-GRIP Design compactor Bag is a specially designed trash compactor bag. This bag is made using a patented method. The multi-surface bag uses different materials for each side: the smooth inside of the bag lets waste move easily; the outside is rough to grip the compactor and prevent slipping during operation. This bag uses multi-laminate layers of special polyethylene material that resists tears and punctures and prevents leakage. The availability of all the different types of waste compactor bags discussed above, has given the customer a large number of options to choose from.

You'll probably want to give some thought to the drawbacks. When the trash compactors were first introduced, it appeared like a good idea to minimize the human waste created in surface area at least. If you are thinking about that, even then you are making that much of trash.By making it small and small you are making it heavier and larger.

In home 2-4 bags, are out in one trash compact bag, where as these bags are mostly used where the garbage is in large amount like commercial use. While minimizing the number of trips to the trashcan seems convenient, you must consider the length of time the waste sits in the compactor, the potential for it to develop an odor, and the possibility that excessive compacting will tear the bag and require to take several additional trips to the garbage bin.

Different Kinds of Trash Bags

Litter, waste, garbage - solved through the very helpful trash bags! Yes, trash bags may seem to look very simple but imagine the world without them - dirt is in chaos, houses would smell stinky, litter cluttered everywhere, and garbage cans are messy. Thanks to the inventors of garbage bags, the Canadians Harry Wasylyk, Larry Hansen and Frank Plomp way back 1950; we have a cleaner and litter free world.

>
>

Nowadays, it is very convenient to organize any trash, whether it is biodegradable, non-biodegradable or recyclable. It is also very useful to have trash liners fitted to every size of waste bins so as not to surround the insides of the bins directly with the garbage. It gives less dirt, less odor, and keeps the bins clean.

Although a trash bag may seem to look the same for most people, there are three major kinds of it which brings a variety for its uses.

Here are the 3 major kinds of garbage bags:

1. Biodegradable

Some trash bags are made of biodegradable "polythene film". This makes the plastic decompose into carbon dioxide and water when exposed to air, sun, moisture and microorganisms, but not readily in a sealed landfill.

Another is oxo-biodegradable or a plastic made of "polyolefin". This can hold organic waste materials which can be handled straight into the composting plant. This can produce high quality compost that is mostly used by farmers and growers.

2. Low Density

Low Density trash bags are extremely strong bags and more resistant to tearing and water. Even though they do not hold as much weight as High Density trash bags, they are considerably stretchable and can make bigger space for contents that need to be closely tied, like shredded papers.

This is commonly a choice bag for household use since it is meant for sharp objects such as sticks, glass, eating utensils, crab legs, or wet waste materials that could rip the bag.

3. High Density

High Density trash bags have extraordinary strength and durability that are best for carrying heavy materials. They are thicker than Low Density garbage bags and features better puncture resistance for greater load capacity.

This is usually the choice bag for commercial and industrial use, like hospitals, hotels, restaurants, contract cleaners and schools since it can carry as much waste products.

So whether for landfill, for household or for commercial and industrial use, garbage bags and its kinds are unquestionably necessary to keep the world in order and unclutter the waste of everyday living.

Let's Talk Trash

According the the E.P.A's most recent report the average American throws away 4.6 pounds of garbage each and every day or 1,679 pounds a year. When you times that by over 2 million Americans that is a lot of garbage!

Americans make up less than 5% of the world's population but we manufacture 40% of the world's garbage. Is it any wonder we are considered the most wasteful people in the world?

>
>

Where Does all that Garbage Come From?

The garbage we manufacture comes from many sources. From food to automobiles, from paper to plastic to glass.

Figures show that Americans throw away between 35% and 50% of the food they purchase. Not only is this a costly habit but it is one that adds to growing problem of landfills and environment. When food is dumped into landfills and is buried it does not get oxygen and break down as nutrients for the soil rather it turns into methane gas which contributes to global warming.

Experts suggest rather than throw your unused food into the trash you start a compost pile. When placed where oxygen can get to it food will break down into harmless compost that can enrich the soil instead of gas that harms the environment.

Paper is another item that adds to our growing trash problem. Americans use over 50 million tons of paper a year most of it finds its way into the trash bin. This means that 850 million trees need to be cut down in order to keep Americans in paper products.

Recycling paper would save some of these trees further helping the environment and eliminating much of our garbage problem as well.

Another large source of trash comes from plastic packaging and bottles. The average American throws away 60 pounds of plastic packaging a year and there are 13 Billion plastic bottles thrown away by Americans each year.

While most states and most people now recycle plastic pop bottles because of the deposit all other plastic goes straight to landfills. Recycling water bottles and milk jugs would not only cut down on the garbage and helped the environment but these bottles when recycled properly can be used to make playground equipment for our children.

Thirteen million tons of glass is thrown away each year. Glass too is an easy item to recycle instead of throwing in the trash. Recycling those glass jars and bottles could cut air pollution as much as 20%.

In these economic times, most Americans are looking for ways to cut expenses, and recycling items such as old electronics, clothing, and books is a great way to cut expenses. Not only will donating items you no longer feel are useful to you a great way for someone else to obtain useful items at a price they can afford, but you too can save money by shopping resale and thrift shops as well as cut down on the amount of garbage that is being hauled away.

More and more Americans are discovering that recycling can save them money and save the environment. If we all try a little harder we can reduce our waste from more than 4 pounds a day dramatically.

Trash Can And Waste Container Information

Waste containers are called a lot of things but in the end they are used for mainly one purpose, a place for us to put our garbage. Waste containers are sometimes referred to as trash cans, waste receptacles, garbage cans, trash containers, rubbish bins, waste containers and the list goes on. There are two main categories of commercial trash cans; ones that are used for garbage and ones that are used for recycling.

>
>

Trash cans that are used for general garbage come is all different types, sizes, colors and styles. Some trash containers have ashtrays built in and are made for smoking areas and building entrance ways. Waste containers are also made out of different materials. Waste containers are made from materials such as plastic, stainless steel, cement and chrome. Different styles of waste containers are used for different purposes and by purchasing different color trash containers you can specify that types of garbage that goes into each.

The first style of trash container which is probably the smallest is the desk side trash container. These waste containers come in all sizes but are usually kept small to conserve of space usage. These types of garbage cans can also come with lids that have different size openings and markings to signify the type of trash they are used for. The largest manufacturer of desk side trash cans is probably Rubbermaid who produces over 100 different styles.

The next trash container up in size is the Brute trash can. These come in sizes from 25 gallon to 55 gallon and are sized by the volume of garbage they can hold. Wheeled dollies can be purchased for these containers so that they are easier to move because of the weight of garbage they can hold. Most Brute containers are made from a plastic resin and are extremely durable and easy to clean. For custodial purposes a caddy bag which can hold cleaning items can be attached to the side of the Brute garbage container.

Trash carts are the largest type of trash container. These huge trash cans on wheels are usually measured in cubic feet and are used to transport large amounts of trash from location to location. The most common type of trash carts have a horizontal wall at one end and an angled wall at the other to help assist when dumping garbage.

Building entrance garbage cans are usually made from a cement or a stone type material. These materials make the trash can extremely durable against all weather conditions. These containers usually come with a large opening in the top and some have ashtrays and cigarette disposal features that are filled with ashtray or smoking urn silica sand. Because these trash containers are so large they commonly have a door built into the side of the unit so that trash bags can be easily removed and replaced.

Disposing of the Kitchen Trash - 4 Tips to Do it in a Frugal, Clean, and Green Way

If you have decided to live in a clean environment in your house and want to do it in a frugal and green way, then this article is a must read. You will know the best ways to keep your kitchen and bathroom trash can clean and to not overspend money on buying the can and the liners. You will know tips and tricks to keep your trash can clean at all times, and prevent unpleasant odors. The four tips are: Buy a plastic can instead of stainless steel or wood or leather for the kitchen and the bathroom, Use your grocery bags instead of liners, Make sure your trash bags are bio degradable, and Create an easy routine for yourself or your family.

>
>

Buy a Plastic Garbage Can

For kitchen and bathroom, your priority number one is cleanliness. The advantage of a plastic garbage can is that it is much less expensive than the stainless steel, or wooden garbage can. Second, it is much easier to maintain. Plastic does not suffer dents like the stainless steel and wood does, it is easier to clean and maintain, and, unlike stainless steel, it won't suffer from fingerprints and scratches. Instead of buying one large garbage can, buy two smaller of the 3.5-4 gallon size, so you can use grocery bags instead of liners, see the next tip. If you pay attention to make sure your plastic garbage can is completely biodegradable, you can be proud that you are taking good care of the planet as well.

Use Your Grocery Bags Instead of Liners

When you are buying a garbage can, make sure it has hooks where you can attach a grocery bags. Many plastic and stainless steel garbage cans will have these hooks on their rims. Be sure to buy 3.5-4 gallon trash cans because that is the best size that will fit a grocery bag. It turns out that, when you follow directions in the next tip, the number of grocery bags you need to bring your food home each week is just about the same as the number of grocery bags you need for the daily storage and disposal of kitchen trash. The bathroom trash bags will usually last longer.

Use Biodegradable Plastic Grocery Bags

The best choice for grocery bags when you bring your groceries home would be to use biodegradable plastic grocery bags. Ask your grocery manager what material the grocery bags are made of and whether it is biodegradable. If the plastic grocery bags in your grocery store are not biodegradable, then go with the paper grocery bags.

Create an Easy Routine

A big advantage of using smaller, 3.5-4 gallon trash cans is that as long as you are preparing food at home that day, you will fill up one or more bags in just a single day. It will be easy for you to keep the routine to dispose of the filled trash bags by the end of the day, either to take them to the chute if you live in an apartment house or take them to the garbage bin if you live in a detached home. By not overfilling the trash bags, you will reduce the risk of breakage and spills which will help keep the garbage can clean and odor-free for a long time to come.

By following these four simple tips, you will keep your kitchen clean, free of garbage odors. You will save your money and you will save yourself from unnecessary deliberations such as - Is it time to empty the trash yet? You will also live green and will take a good care of your environment. So now that you know what to do, is it time to get a new garbage can yet? Before you buy, just make sure that you buy biodegradable plastic, 3.5-4 gallon size, make sure the can has hooks for the grocery bags. Then create an easy daily routine of emptying the trash can, either for yourself, or in collaboration with your family members.

Creating More Garbage to Track the Pacific Gyre Trash Disaster

There is a sickening and disgusting thing happening in many of our world's oceans. Our trash is piling up, often creating garbage islands, and circulating around in circles amongst the natural current. Since, it keeps going around in circles; it is out of sight and out of mind, well for humans, not such a good deal for sea life. The problem is there is an abundance of trash out there, and it is seriously getting to be a problem.

When Typhoons come along or big storms it is blown on to the shores in Asia and it is there for all too see, bottles, plastic, wrappers, and well you name it, human trash. I propose we create even more garbage and throw it into the mix. WHAT? You ask, well, let me explain and don't get angry this is a good idea. Right now, the garbage is swirling around, waiting to form into a trash island, just like particles in space become planets. The Storms sometimes break them apart and the process starts all over again.

Each time more trash is found floating, the problem just keeps getting bigger each year, and decade. My idea is to create "fake garbage" and use those pieces of trash as floating sensors; some of this garbage is 90-feet below the surface and above. If you had one piece of "fake trash" every 1-mile and used nodes and motes to connect to an "artificial grid" and added that to the net-centric grid of detection, with one of the pieces of trash closest to the surface using an active matrix RFID communication system, which pinged the satellite as densities increased.

Then we send a ship in to capture the trash as it reaches a density large enough to catch, then we collect it to be recycled. Meanwhile, we work to find out where the trash is coming from, along river mouths, dumps, and trash ships that dump it. We must stop this pollution, it's just grotesque in every regard.

Some say this idea is too expensive and the sensors would cost too much, but no one has come up with a method yet of tracking, containing, collecting, and then recycling all this trash. I believe MIT has used a very simple system we could employ for Lobster tracking to find out if the nitrates from the run-off is causing their shells to decay and become brittle in Maine and Mass. If we use their technology the price for the sensors would be cheap.

The sensors could be made cheap, ($3 for the nodes and motes plus the pop bottle, which I could drink first and then re-cap? ha ha ha) and the expensive piece would be the $150 satellite relay pingers and chip for the data, solar powered, or use a satellite phone, use Chinese technology, it's cheap, re-program it for our usage). The satellite pingers could be simple, and I do recall they had some technology like this for cargo container tracking to determine if a radioactive device was on a cargo ship ran off solar, I think was the system. Not sure if that scheme or technology made it through DHS budget.

Nevertheless, all the technology exists and it will help us clean it all up. We need to simultaneously stop the polluting countries and pick up what's there. Please consider all this.
