Boy, Do We Get The Garbage!

For the most part I view our family as the typical nuclear family.. reflecting the personal and practical living priorities of the times we live in. It's certainly not reflective of the family in which I was raised, but those times were different. The parents of us boomers not only had their Depression Era work ethic but also a strong family ethic; dad worked and mom maintained the home front. Life seemed more efficient. But as us boomers aged and cut through the old social norms like a swelling juggernaut we defined our own life priorities and social living standards. And one of the many by-products of that 'swelling' has been.. well, more garbage.

No, that's not a metaphor for the political harrangs coming from our elected officials nor the explanation given by the natural gas company in my gas bill explaining why the bill has doubled .. So our garbage reflects the fast food, prepared food, instant food, microwave food, lifestyle. As I picked up the overflowed paper trash I couldn't help but sigh at what we have given up as a family unit? I mean, well beyond the lack of a home-cooked meal. A supper-table closeness, a proper diet, increased spending, are just a few of the compromises we made.

So, I filled the bag, packed it down, tied it off? and did what I did many years ago for my mother; I took the trash out back and tossed it into a bigger container.. then forgot about it.

According the the E.P.A's most recent report the average American throws away 4.6 pounds of garbage each and every day or 1,679 pounds a year. When you times that by over 2 million Americans that is a lot of garbage!

Americans make up less than 5% of the world's population but we manufacture 40% of the world's garbage. Is it any wonder we are considered the most wasteful people in the world?

Where Does all that Garbage Come From?

The garbage we manufacture comes from many sources. From food to automobiles, from paper to plastic to glass.

Figures show that Americans throw away between 35% and 50% of the food they purchase. Not only is this a costly habit but it is one that adds to growing problem of landfills and environment. When food is dumped into landfills and is buried it does not get oxygen and break down as nutrients for the soil rather it turns into methane gas which contributes to global warming.

Experts suggest rather than throw your unused food into the trash you start a compost pile. When placed where oxygen can get to it food will break down into harmless compost that can enrich the soil instead of gas that harms the environment.

Paper is another item that adds to our growing trash problem. Americans use over 50 million tons of paper a year most of it finds its way into the trash bin. This means that 850 million trees need to be cut down in order to keep Americans in paper products.

Save Money on Garbage Pickup - Why Not?

This is probably the most "off the beaten path" type thing that I use to save money in my everyday life. Feel free to laugh, poke fun, or comment however you wish.

There is a very simple and easy way to save money on your garbage pickup. It takes very little effort, and the savings, when tracked over time, can be quite substantial.

Let me tell you a little story. I was born and raised in Ohio, and back in those good ol' days, we kept about 4 big huge stainless steel garbage cans in the backyard. I think it was always my duty to drag those suckers out to the road each Tuesday morning before school. The garbage men came by, picked up the trash, and the cycle started over again. The key point here is that this service was included in whatever city or local taxes my parents paid at the time.

In 1985, my family moved to Florida. Quite an interesting transition. Included in this transition was adjusting to new trash pickup. The system was exactly the same, with one small change. Shortly after moving in, my parents asked a neighbor which day "garbage day" was. On the assigned day, we dragged our trash out and surprise, everybody else's was picked up but ours. Thinking there was a mistake, we left it there for a day or two. We did not figure out the problem until another sympathetic neighbor came stopped by to tell us that you actually had to pay for the service to get your trash picked up.

My parents signed up with no qualms. I mean, really, what else could you do? This incident kind of stuck with me though. I didn't understand. If our tax money could pay for the service in Ohio, why couldn't it be paid for in Florida?

Fast forward to the year 2000, when I purchased my first home. As part of my starter pack or whatever I received, I got all the information and phone numbers to sign up for my trash disposal. Well, guess where that information went? In the trash disposal itself.

The easiest and simplest way to save money on trash pickup is to not sign up for the service. Honestly, are you kidding me? Pay for trash pickup? Does anyone else not see the insanity in this? It currently would cost me approximately $240 per year to have my trash taken away. I'll get back to that number in a minute.

Needless to say, I have never paid for it. I keep several small garbage cans around the house (which is what I assume most households do). The one in the kitchen fills up just about every day, the ones in the bathrooms a few times a week. When the bags get full, I tie them off, throw them in the trunk and drop them off at the dumpster behind my office at work. It probably takes an extra 30 seconds out of my day.

For those that think this is nasty, compare it to the nastiness of having a 100 gallon plastic bin in your backyard that simply fills up with trash every day of the week. I think I know which if the two scenarios I'd pick.

Simply put, I have saved myself right around $2400 by this method alone since moving into my house. That translates into right around 3 ? free mortgage payments for me.

1. Make sure it is the right kind of garbage truck

This may be the most important consideration! Some garbage trucks automatically pick up the garbage can with a mechanical arm. You need to be sure that you have the type of garbage collection service which manually tosses the garbage into the back of the can. If you skip this step, things could go horribly wrong!

2. Use an empty garbage can

Some people make the mistake of climbing in on top of the trash that is already in the can. You don't know how long you are going to need to hide in the can, and trash can produce toxic fumes.

3. Set up a camera.

For maximum effect, set up a camera pointing at the trash can. This way you can watch your prank again and again. You can also post it on to YouTube if you get a particularly funny reaction out of the garbage man.

4. Coordinate

Creating More Garbage to Track the Pacific Gyre Trash Disaster

There is a sickening and disgusting thing happening in many of our world's oceans. Our trash is piling up, often creating garbage islands, and circulating around in circles amongst the natural current. Since, it keeps going around in circles; it is out of sight and out of mind, well for humans, not such a good deal for sea life. The problem is there is an abundance of trash out there, and it is seriously getting to be a problem.

When Typhoons come along or big storms it is blown on to the shores in Asia and it is there for all too see, bottles, plastic, wrappers, and well you name it, human trash. I propose we create even more garbage and throw it into the mix. WHAT? You ask, well, let me explain and don't get angry this is a good idea. Right now, the garbage is swirling around, waiting to form into a trash island, just like particles in space become planets. The Storms sometimes break them apart and the process starts all over again.

Each time more trash is found floating, the problem just keeps getting bigger each year, and decade. My idea is to create "fake garbage" and use those pieces of trash as floating sensors; some of this garbage is 90-feet below the surface and above. If you had one piece of "fake trash" every 1-mile and used nodes and motes to connect to an "artificial grid" and added that to the net-centric grid of detection, with one of the pieces of trash closest to the surface using an active matrix RFID communication system, which pinged the satellite as densities increased.

Then we send a ship in to capture the trash as it reaches a density large enough to catch, then we collect it to be recycled. Meanwhile, we work to find out where the trash is coming from, along river mouths, dumps, and trash ships that dump it. We must stop this pollution, it's just grotesque in every regard.

Some say this idea is too expensive and the sensors would cost too much, but no one has come up with a method yet of tracking, containing, collecting, and then recycling all this trash. I believe MIT has used a very simple system we could employ for Lobster tracking to find out if the nitrates from the run-off is causing their shells to decay and become brittle in Maine and Mass. If we use their technology the price for the sensors would be cheap.

The sensors could be made cheap, ($3 for the nodes and motes plus the pop bottle, which I could drink first and then re-cap? ha ha ha) and the expensive piece would be the $150 satellite relay pingers and chip for the data, solar powered, or use a satellite phone, use Chinese technology, it's cheap, re-program it for our usage). The satellite pingers could be simple, and I do recall they had some technology like this for cargo container tracking to determine if a radioactive device was on a cargo ship ran off solar, I think was the system. Not sure if that scheme or technology made it through DHS budget.

Nevertheless, all the technology exists and it will help us clean it all up. We need to simultaneously stop the polluting countries and pick up what's there. Please consider all this.
