Outdoor garbage cans are essential to have in every home. The garbage can in the kitchen is mostly used but we always need an outdoor garbage can so we can move all the trash outside for the garbage truck to pick up every morning. They are both convenient and practical and have really large capacities to hold trash. They are not as fashionable as kitchen trash cans but many companies have manufactured outdoor garbage cans that look appealing or attractive to the eye.
There are some points to keep in mind when you are shopping for outdoor trash cans. First, you need to keep volume in mind. What size do you need your trash can to be? You need to think about how often your trash will be collected in this. Some people collect it once or few times a week. However, the best to purchase are the two medium sized outdoor trash cans which will prove to come in very handy as outdoor trash cans no matter how many times you take out the garbage.
The garbage can should be tough and well built and it should be competent to endure harsh and wild weather conditions outside. The trash cans should be easy to move so you can transport them from one place to another. It is best to buy trash cans with wheels so you can easily transport a full and heavy trash can with no difficulty. Some even have adjustable leg levelers in order to provide you with stability. This is helpful if you place your trash can on uneven surfaces.
The outdoor trash cans should have built in leak proof mechanism and be corrosion resistant. This way the smell from the trash will not come outside and any liquids will stay inside the can. The trash cans should also have locking facilities so even if they do fall over the trash does not go all over the place. It should also be a UV inhibitor so its color does not fade away with the passage of time. Also make sure if the material of the can is recyclable or not.
The material should not splinter, peel or rust with time. It is best to purchase outdoor trash cans that are made from tough materials as these are very durable. Just opt to purchase well known brands instead from companies that you have never heard from before. Then you can be sure that the trash can will be well worth your money.
If you are using a plastic trash can and have been wondering how to clean that can, you will want to read this article. It gives you several simple tips on not only how to clean the trash can but also how to maintain it so the cleaning will not be needed often.
In the today's "consume and dispose" societies the trash can has become the must used piece of furniture. Because of the frequent use in large families that prepare a significant portion of their food at home, the kitchen trash can may sometimes become a source of an unpleasant odor. And other times, it could be a sore to look at. Especially with the plastic trash cans, dirt and food leaks may permeate the walls of the can and cause odors even after we have removed the trash. We will cover the following points about cleaning a plastic trash can: How to minimize odor and stains before cleaning is needed, Washing and scrubbing the trash can, and finally, Removing the residual odor.
How To Minimize Odor and Stains Without Cleaning the Can
The trick when using a plastic trash can is to empty the trash bag out regularly, preferably daily. So the first consideration should be the size of the trash can and the size of the trash bags or liners. When you pick the sizes just right, the trash can bag will be filled by the end of the day just about every day. It will become an easy daily chore to go out and empty the trash. The reason why removing trash daily from the plastic trash bag is so important is that the inner wall of a plastic trash can is susceptible to absorbing the organic dirt and when not removed daily, that dirt can diffuse deeper into the inner wall, making it difficult to clean thoroughly later.
Washing and Scrubbing the Can
Once you have been following the previous point for a while, you will notice a lot less dirt inside the plastic trash bag. To clean that dirt, remove the bag or liner from the trash can. Take the plastic trash can outside and hose it with water. Add some soap or dishwasher liquid to the mix. If you can not go outside, use the kitchen sink hose/shower head to hose the inside and the outside of the trash can with water. Clean the can with a sponge soaked in soap or dishwasher liquid. Then scrub the remaining stains with the sponge or use an old toothbrush to clean small, hard to reach areas.
Removing the Residual Odor
If you have followed the above directions, there will not be much residual odor. However, you can let the can dry and then scatter some baking soda on the bottom of the can. Baking soda is known as an active absorber of odors. As you replace the trash can back in its usual place, just remember to keep the daily routine of emptying the can, and your trash can will remain clean much longer.
Here you have it. Three simple steps to keep your plastic trash can odor free and to clean it when cleaning is needed. Now that you know the simple steps, pay attention to your kitchen trash can. Is it odorless and stainless? If not, why not take the time now to accomplish the three steps and clean your plastic trash can. Then, remember to buy the right size trash bags so you will be able to remove the trash daily and the odors will never have a chance to diffuse deep into the walls of the plastic trash can. And you will not need to clean the can for a long time coming.
If you feel emptying the trash daily will be a difficult feat to accomplish, join me later - I will write about how to accomplish the daily trash removal from the kitchen in one of my upcoming articles. That way if you are by yourself or if you have a family, you will no longer have any trouble getting the trash removed in a timely manner.

Garbage cans are a necessity whether you are indoors or outdoors. No matter how big or small your house is, without a dustbin it will not look clean or tidy and thus the overall appeal diminishes tremendously. For this purpose a large number of different types and styles of trash cans have been developed which are not only perfect to throw the waste in but also look pleasing to the eye.
They are available in many different sizes big and small. Most people prefer to have larger garbage cans for commercial and outdoor purposes and smaller ones for indoor functions. The smaller bins are normally kept in the living or bedroom. The size of the dust bin mainly depends on the amount of trash that needs to be thrown into it.
Size is not the only factor; the varieties of trash cans differ significantly on the basis of the lining and the type of main container. The major concern of people regarding garbage is to prevent any kind of liquid seepage or odor leakage. Currently the varieties of trash cans come with liners made of plastic material that is either polyethylene or polypropylene. Therefore you need not worry about any kind of mess that could be created through throwing in liquid garbage.
Some people even use simple black bags for trashing however they spread odor and are not as hygienic as the proper trash cans. Besides the liners the main garbage container varieties also include ones which are step on and have sealed covers. The step on function prevents the user from touching the can whenever the need to throw the rubbish away arises while sealed covers keep the odor from spreading around. Thus no matter how much wastes you have to discard these garbage cans ensure that they keep the surroundings clean and hygienic.
Other than these kinds there are also stainless steel trash cans which can be purchased at a highly reasonable price. These are made of corrosion resistant material which keeps them shiny and fit from the outer look and also makes them perfect for throwing the wastes in. some people even use these types of trash cans as storage for keeping pet food or bird seeds.
Spending on the right kind of a trash can is a good option since they are a long term investment. The prices for larger and better quality bins are significantly more than their counterparts. The more sophisticated a trash can is the better will be its functionality to keep the surroundings sanitized.
The purchase of garbage cans requires the same amount of consideration as any other thing. Although most people might take them for granted the fact that they have become a major part of virtually every place humans inhabit multiplies their importance manifold. Owing to their increasing importance many new varieties and types of garbage cans have been created which makes their selection difficult. To add ease to the process following tips should be kept in mind.
First and foremost the size is important to consider. Garbage cans come in many different large and small varieties. A trash can is perfect in size if it has enough space to keep the normal trash of a day and it does not look oversized in the area or room where it is kept. Then the budget is important to consider. It is not wise to over spend on anything. There are many brands that are producing great varieties of garbage cans however they are relatively expensive. If you can not afford to purchase any of these you can fearlessly purchase their cheaper substitutes which are equally better.
Next thing to consider is to try and find the type of a trash cans which are touch-less. These are particularly helpful in the kitchen where you are frequently required to throw peels and garbage. If you have to touch the bin every time it will prove very hectic to cleanse your hands so that you can get back to cooking. If you purchase a relatively large trash can then the ones which come with wheels are preferred since they are portable and can easily be displaced from one place to another.
The waste bins which seal the odor are gaining raging popularity. The sealed lids and covers of the trash containers ensure that any kind of bad smell does not leak and spread in the area. Then there are bins with locks which ensure that stray animals can not throw the trash out of the bin. This is an important feature to consider while purchasing waste cans for outdoor purposes.
Stainless steel garbage cans are a preferable choice as they are not easily corroded or blotched. Next you should purchase a trash liner. This acts as a barrier to ensure the garbage container is kept clean and it also makes garbage disposal easy.
Following these tips is bound to land you on the trash can that is perfectly suited for your area or room. It is a kind of an investment which is essential for the health of people as well as for the hygiene of the surroundings..
Sitting on the bullet train with Fred, we were moving across Japan at 240 kph, moving speedily to another meaningless meeting. Hurry up to wait. Peering out the window at the darkening landscape, we couldn't see Mt. Fuji. We knew it was there and we were 99.99% sure that we would not be able to see it. We still looked just the same. Naturally, obscured by clouds, pollution or both, we couldn't see it. The darkening landscape may have been a factor too. Collecting my trash from a 7-11 salmon rice ball, a handful of tangerines, and a Crunky chocolate bar, I stuffed it into the 7-11 bag and commented, "I do miss trash cans."
I should have known better than to make such a comment around Fred. After the terrible terrorist attacks of 9-11, the garbage cans on the bullet trains were taped shut and people had to take their garbage off the train with them, or leave it on the train. He quickly replied, "You know, trains in Japan were always one place that you could be sure of finding a garbage can. Where can we be confident of finding trash cans? Certainly not on the street and certainly not in parks. Did I ever tell you about Mike and his garbage can inquiry?"
I nodded my head, but my nod was in vain. Fred started to tell me all about Mike and his garbage, again, "Mike made the foolish mistake of replying to one of those let's ask the foreign residents for their feedback about life in Japan inquiries. Mike was tired of going to the park with his son, not finding any garbage cans, and seeing all the trash scattered around. Mike thought that if there were trash cans, people would use them. Mike mistakenly thought that trash cans were an obvious municipal service. So, he replied to that effect. Would you believe that two guys from city hall went all the way out to Mike's house to explain why there were no trash cans in the park? They explained that trash cans would be an added expense that the city did not want to pay for, which was why they had the take your garbage home with you approach. When Mike pointed out that the take your garbage home approach was not working and people were just dumping their trash in the park, what do you think they said?"
I started to reply, but Fred cut me off, "They explained that it was an added expense that the city did not want to pay for, which was why they had the take your garbage home with you approach. Yes, the two civil servants said the exact same thing all over again. So Mike is wondering why he ever gave feedback in the first place. Even more, Mike is wondering why the local municipal government even asked for feedback."
Fred went on, but I just tuned him out, thinking that we certainly did not have a meeting of the minds here. Mike wanted garbage cans in the public parks. He thought this was a basic municipal service. He thought providing feedback might lead to improvement. Little did Mike know that city hall was not really open to change. There was one way to do things - the city hall way. City hall was always open to explaining exactly what they were doing. They thought that explaining how they did things would help people to understand what was going on. They thought that explaining would help to reduce problems. They did not have a clue that people providing feedback expected change.
Mike never gave any feedback again.

Garbage cans have been around for a very long time. Historically it is very difficult to trace the exact date of their origin however many evidences are available regarding the time period around which waste disposal techniques were seriously considered. Ever since man was created he used some means for getting rid of unwanted materials. It was buried in land, thrown in the sea, fed to animals or burnt. However for a very long time when people were uncivilized they preferred to keep anything and everything that had the slightest chance of being reused.
Due to improper mechanism for disposing waste, heaps of garbage and litter would pile up. It was prone to great risk of contamination. The risk materialized when in 1350 "black plague" erupted and more than 25 million people from all over Europe fell victim to it in just five years. That is when the Government started to look seriously into the matter of garbage disposal and appointed people for collecting waste.
Since then many waste disposal techniques have evolved and in the European countries it has earned the reputation of an industry. The use of waste haulers, incinerators and loaders has made garbage disposal highly sophisticated. Trash collectors are an integral part of the European societies and to ease their task people gather the waste in garbage cans and keep them outside to ease their collection and removal.
Owing to the varying requirements of disposing trash on the commercial and residential basis, many different types of bins have been developed. Each type is perfectly suited for its specific purpose. Over the entire history of trashing, covered, uncovered, step on and foot opening waste cans have facilitated throwing the garbage in a hygienic and touch free manner. Lids and locked covers prevent waste contamination and trash dispersion as well as avert foul smell and odor from spreading. However if you are travelling or in a place where there are no trash cans available then it is better to use practically any container for trashing purpose than to throw it away randomly.
Proper waste disposal and garbage removal procedures are a symbol of civilized nations. For centuries man has tried to improve himself and his surroundings and emergence of trash cans is one of the major creations in that respect. The great advantages they have to offer have mad them household commodity. Whether indoor or outdoor, in your home or in a mall, you can not go on for long without looking for a garbage can near by to throw away some kind of trash.

For the most part I view our family as the typical nuclear family.. reflecting the personal and practical living priorities of the times we live in. It's certainly not reflective of the family in which I was raised, but those times were different. The parents of us boomers not only had their Depression Era work ethic but also a strong family ethic; dad worked and mom maintained the home front. Life seemed more efficient. But as us boomers aged and cut through the old social norms like a swelling juggernaut we defined our own life priorities and social living standards. And one of the many by-products of that 'swelling' has been.. well, more garbage.
No, that's not a metaphor for the political harrangs coming from our elected officials nor the explanation given by the natural gas company in my gas bill explaining why the bill has doubled .. I'm talking about real garbage; the stuff we toss in garbage bags. I was raised in a family of four and I am currently a parental unit in a family of five. When I think back of the amount of garbage generated then compared to now one would think the additional person increased family garbage 10 fold. Obviously it's not that the extra person has made that much difference but rather the lifestyle change in our current culture.
We honestly generate in our household one of those lawn-size garbage bags full of trash each day. One day as I was passing through the kitchen I noticed the overflowing trash container.. you know which one it is, that little plastic thing that can hold two plastic milk jugs and a Campbell's soup can (I once entertained the marketing of an industrial 55 gallon drum with designer trim for kitchen use? but that didn't fit under the sink too well). Anyway, as I stood there for a moment pondering which kid I was going to chastise, I surveyed the contents. Interestingly I found there was very little true organic refuse. I mean, in my day mother compacted meat bones, coffee grounds, dish scrapings, cooking residue, and a few wrappers into a half gallon milk container then sent me out to the trash can in the alley. This stuff I was looking at was essentially paper packaging - daughter's macaroni and cheese box.. a couple cardboard frozen pizza wrappings, a half gallon orange juice container (the same kind of container mother used for a full day of garbage), a bevy of unrecognizable wrappings, a Chef Boy-R-De ravioli can (large size), a Burger King paper cup (large), a handful of the day's junk mail, an old Time magazine, and a couple microwave popcorn bags.. and this was only noontime!
Well, like most families these days we seldom cook because everyone goes their separate ways and both parents work. So our garbage reflects the fast food, prepared food, instant food, microwave food, lifestyle. As I picked up the overflowed paper trash I couldn't help but sigh at what we have given up as a family unit? I mean, well beyond the lack of a home-cooked meal. A supper-table closeness, a proper diet, increased spending, are just a few of the compromises we made.
So, I filled the bag, packed it down, tied it off? and did what I did many years ago for my mother; I took the trash out back and tossed it into a bigger container.. then forgot about it.

Wood garbage cans are so much nicer than your traditional garbage cans. Not only do they look nicer, but you could also match the color and texture to whatever room you want it in! Wood garbage cans offer more of an elegant look than your run of the mill garbage cans. What's even better about them is that you can actually make one yourself! It's really easy and if you have some time and a bit of desire, you too can make your own wood garbage can! Let's read on to learn why you need to have one of these in your home.
Here are some of the main reasons why people decide to replace their old, smelly garbage can with a nice looking, wood, garbage can -
1. The overall appearance. It is a clean look that really disguises your trash can into a nice looking piece of furniture.
2. It traps the awful smell that plastic garbage cans usually emit. Most of the wood trash cans out there have a flip-top lid that allows the raunchy smell to stay where it belongs - in the trash!
3. The design of the wood garbage can be anything you want! If you want dark wood, then you go with a dark wood. If you want light wood, you go with light wood. Because chances are you're going to build this yourself, you get to chose!
4. Creates a healthier home environment. Think about it! All those germs in a trash can that aren't covered get into the air in your house. By keeping it contained with an enclosed box, you're eliminating some of the threat of germs and bacteria.
These garbage cans really serve as a "sleeve" for your existing garbage can. Basically it is a box in which you put your garbage can in. This "box" has a lid on it that closes over your existing garbage can. Essentially what this does is allows your wood garbage can to remain clean while maintaining a nice look. Because of the simplicity involved with these wood garbage cans, they are very easy to build as well!
If you're just starting out with woodworking, this is a great way to get started. It is easy to build and requires minimal knowledge. All you really need to do is identify what sort of wood you want as well as the color and you're off! Get a couple of hinges and a handle and the next thing you know...you have an awesome looking trash can!
If you aren't quite sure how to make something like this yourself, don't worry. I have identified a resource that will not only give you the information you need to build a wood garbage can, but also covers hundreds of other wood working projects. If you really want to make wood garbage cans, I recommend you check out this resource that will outline all of the materials and steps needed to build your very own wood garbage can!
Best of luck to you!

Unfortunately, dogs do have an attraction to garbage. All dogs like the way garbage smells and assume they will be able to find a few tasty leftovers they would be able to eat. Many times your dog would want to rummage through your trash just to relieve boredom. Here are a number of ways to stop your pet from continuing this annoying habit.
** When and if you catch your dog exploring your garbage, you should walk up to them. Call out to them and tell them "bad dog" and then tell them "get out" while motioning them away from the trash.
** You should now discipline your dog. Place them in a room and give them some alone time. Make sure you repeat why you have placed them alone in the room.
** Now you must continue to reinforce and repeat your edict on the dog not rooting through the garbage. Hopefully, through repetition and consistency, your dog will gradually learn that he or she must stop this behavior.
** Another aspect is making sure you do your best to block all opportunities for the dog to get into where the garbage is.
** Empty the trash. Should you not have a trash can that has a foot operated lid, it will be in your best interest to get one. You have to be sure the garbage container will stay closed.
** If you have garbage or trash ready to be disposed of, try doing it as quickly as possible. By allowing trash to stay around you will attract your pet to search through it.
** Do not be too forceful while trying to train your dog to quit going through the trash. You should exhibit as much patience as possible with him or her.
** A firm but gentle command will always create a better response with your dog rather than one which is too forceful.
** The bottom line is to be consistent with your efforts to keep your dog out of and away from trash and garbage. So long as you have shown regular efforts in this regard, you will be rewarded when your dog eventually gets the correct message.

This is probably the most "off the beaten path" type thing that I use to save money in my everyday life. Feel free to laugh, poke fun, or comment however you wish.
There is a very simple and easy way to save money on your garbage pickup. It takes very little effort, and the savings, when tracked over time, can be quite substantial.
Let me tell you a little story. I was born and raised in Ohio, and back in those good ol' days, we kept about 4 big huge stainless steel garbage cans in the backyard. I think it was always my duty to drag those suckers out to the road each Tuesday morning before school. The garbage men came by, picked up the trash, and the cycle started over again. The key point here is that this service was included in whatever city or local taxes my parents paid at the time.
In 1985, my family moved to Florida. Quite an interesting transition. Included in this transition was adjusting to new trash pickup. The system was exactly the same, with one small change. Shortly after moving in, my parents asked a neighbor which day "garbage day" was. On the assigned day, we dragged our trash out and surprise, everybody else's was picked up but ours. Thinking there was a mistake, we left it there for a day or two. We did not figure out the problem until another sympathetic neighbor came stopped by to tell us that you actually had to pay for the service to get your trash picked up.
My parents signed up with no qualms. I mean, really, what else could you do? This incident kind of stuck with me though. I didn't understand. If our tax money could pay for the service in Ohio, why couldn't it be paid for in Florida?
Fast forward to the year 2000, when I purchased my first home. As part of my starter pack or whatever I received, I got all the information and phone numbers to sign up for my trash disposal. Well, guess where that information went? In the trash disposal itself.
The easiest and simplest way to save money on trash pickup is to not sign up for the service. Honestly, are you kidding me? Pay for trash pickup? Does anyone else not see the insanity in this? It currently would cost me approximately $240 per year to have my trash taken away. I'll get back to that number in a minute.
Needless to say, I have never paid for it. I keep several small garbage cans around the house (which is what I assume most households do). The one in the kitchen fills up just about every day, the ones in the bathrooms a few times a week. When the bags get full, I tie them off, throw them in the trunk and drop them off at the dumpster behind my office at work. It probably takes an extra 30 seconds out of my day.
For those that think this is nasty, compare it to the nastiness of having a 100 gallon plastic bin in your backyard that simply fills up with trash every day of the week. I think I know which if the two scenarios I'd pick.
Simply put, I have saved myself right around $2400 by this method alone since moving into my house. That translates into right around 3 ? free mortgage payments for me.
I hope you're not still laughing about my silly idea to save money on trash pickup!!

There is a great prank you can pull on your neighborhood garbage man that many kids have been performing throughout the years. The basic prank is that you will hide inside a garbage can, and when the garbage truck comes by, you will jump out of the truck and scare the living daylights out of the garbage man.
Here are a few tips to make sure you get this prank right:
1. Make sure it is the right kind of garbage truck
This may be the most important consideration! Some garbage trucks automatically pick up the garbage can with a mechanical arm. You need to be sure that you have the type of garbage collection service which manually tosses the garbage into the back of the can. If you skip this step, things could go horribly wrong!
2. Use an empty garbage can
Some people make the mistake of climbing in on top of the trash that is already in the can. You don't know how long you are going to need to hide in the can, and trash can produce toxic fumes.
3. Set up a camera.
For maximum effect, set up a camera pointing at the trash can. This way you can watch your prank again and again. You can also post it on to YouTube if you get a particularly funny reaction out of the garbage man.
4. Coordinate
You might want to have a friend remain in the house and to communicate with him on your cell phone. It can be hard to tell exactly what's happening when you are inside a dark trash can, but your friend can let you know exactly when to jump out for maximum effectiveness.
5. Watch Out for Angry Trash Men
Some garbage men can't take a joke, and they may become angry. Of course, this is true of any prank. You are doing this all in the name of fun, and the majority of them get a laugh out of it. That's it! Now you've got an idea for how to prank your garbage man, so get after it!

There is a sickening and disgusting thing happening in many of our world's oceans. Our trash is piling up, often creating garbage islands, and circulating around in circles amongst the natural current. Since, it keeps going around in circles; it is out of sight and out of mind, well for humans, not such a good deal for sea life. The problem is there is an abundance of trash out there, and it is seriously getting to be a problem.
When Typhoons come along or big storms it is blown on to the shores in Asia and it is there for all too see, bottles, plastic, wrappers, and well you name it, human trash. I propose we create even more garbage and throw it into the mix. WHAT? You ask, well, let me explain and don't get angry this is a good idea. Right now, the garbage is swirling around, waiting to form into a trash island, just like particles in space become planets. The Storms sometimes break them apart and the process starts all over again.
Each time more trash is found floating, the problem just keeps getting bigger each year, and decade. My idea is to create "fake garbage" and use those pieces of trash as floating sensors; some of this garbage is 90-feet below the surface and above. If you had one piece of "fake trash" every 1-mile and used nodes and motes to connect to an "artificial grid" and added that to the net-centric grid of detection, with one of the pieces of trash closest to the surface using an active matrix RFID communication system, which pinged the satellite as densities increased.
Then we send a ship in to capture the trash as it reaches a density large enough to catch, then we collect it to be recycled. Meanwhile, we work to find out where the trash is coming from, along river mouths, dumps, and trash ships that dump it. We must stop this pollution, it's just grotesque in every regard.
Some say this idea is too expensive and the sensors would cost too much, but no one has come up with a method yet of tracking, containing, collecting, and then recycling all this trash. I believe MIT has used a very simple system we could employ for Lobster tracking to find out if the nitrates from the run-off is causing their shells to decay and become brittle in Maine and Mass. If we use their technology the price for the sensors would be cheap.
The sensors could be made cheap, ($3 for the nodes and motes plus the pop bottle, which I could drink first and then re-cap? ha ha ha) and the expensive piece would be the $150 satellite relay pingers and chip for the data, solar powered, or use a satellite phone, use Chinese technology, it's cheap, re-program it for our usage). The satellite pingers could be simple, and I do recall they had some technology like this for cargo container tracking to determine if a radioactive device was on a cargo ship ran off solar, I think was the system. Not sure if that scheme or technology made it through DHS budget.
Nevertheless, all the technology exists and it will help us clean it all up. We need to simultaneously stop the polluting countries and pick up what's there. Please consider all this.
