How to Keep Your Dog From Getting Into the Garbage

Unfortunately, dogs do have an attraction to garbage. All dogs like the way garbage smells and assume they will be able to find a few tasty leftovers they would be able to eat. Many times your dog would want to rummage through your trash just to relieve boredom. Here are a number of ways to stop your pet from continuing this annoying habit.

** When and if you catch your dog exploring your garbage, you should walk up to them. Call out to them and tell them "bad dog" and then tell them "get out" while motioning them away from the trash.

** You should now discipline your dog. Place them in a room and give them some alone time. Make sure you repeat why you have placed them alone in the room.

** Now you must continue to reinforce and repeat your edict on the dog not rooting through the garbage. Hopefully, through repetition and consistency, your dog will gradually learn that he or she must stop this behavior.

** Another aspect is making sure you do your best to block all opportunities for the dog to get into where the garbage is.

** Empty the trash. Should you not have a trash can that has a foot operated lid, it will be in your best interest to get one. You have to be sure the garbage container will stay closed.

** If you have garbage or trash ready to be disposed of, try doing it as quickly as possible. By allowing trash to stay around you will attract your pet to search through it.

** Do not be too forceful while trying to train your dog to quit going through the trash. You should exhibit as much patience as possible with him or her.

** A firm but gentle command will always create a better response with your dog rather than one which is too forceful.

** The bottom line is to be consistent with your efforts to keep your dog out of and away from trash and garbage. So long as you have shown regular efforts in this regard, you will be rewarded when your dog eventually gets the correct message.
